2005-02-21 - 6:12 p.m. MORE FOOD FOR THOUGHT 1. Most on-duty deaths or severe injuries happen to police in response to domestic violence calls. Is this because most women do not call until their husband/partner pulls a gun or other weapon? Are we really not calling before this? Why the fuck not? 2. When the police arrive and attempt to take the man away, many officers are assaulted by the female partners who, in the moment of fear and terror at their own harm when they picked up the phone, did not have time to think through the fact that their financial support might now be temporarily cut off until their husband/partner returns from jail. Shouldn't there be financial aid made available to such women when their partners are incarcerated, so that they can work towards leaving while he's away? 3. Most women will return to their asshole partners six to eight times before they finally are able to stay away permanently. What social/financial/legal supports are not in place, that women feel the need to return? Why is love considered a good reason to have the shit kicked out of you? And why do we not applaud these women but instead pathologize them as "weak" and "failures" when they leave the first time? Why not say "Way to go, hon -- only 5 more times and you're outta there!"
Because I need a break from "homework thoughts" and can only be serious for so long... I came SO close last night to posting while drunk. Yep, too much free wine down the hatch after work and I was all giddy and spaced out and incredibly close to posting horrible, awful things with glaring grammatical errors and a whole lot of repetition and wordiness (or else I was just seeing double!) In retrospect, I'm very glad I didn't, if only because your glowing opinion of my perfect spelling would have vanished. Oh, and because I tend to be a gossipy little bitch when I'm drunk.
"May you own what you know, it's yours motherfucker." So hawt.
and the other writings on that site are amazing as well...
